- The University’s Finance system will be unavailable from 7pm, Thursday 14 August until 7am, Monday 18 August. This is a planned outage to allow the system to be updated.

Academic Portfolio Change Proposal consultation
|
Consultation on the Academic Portfolio Change Proposal is ongoing. The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) and Pro Vice-Chancellor (International & Future Students) are meeting with colleges, leaders and teams across the Portfolio. The Registrar and Director of University Experience are also holding their own discussions. If you would like to book a session, please join the session organised for your College or area.
Draft positions descriptions are currently being developed in response to feedback from staff.

Residential Experience Division (RED) Change Proposal consultation

The Residential Experience Division (RED) Change Proposal is open for consultation until 12pm, Wednesday 20 August. You can read the proposal, watch the Town Hall recording and submit your feedback via the Renew ÃÛÌÒÊÓÆµwebsite.

The ÃÛÌÒÊÓÆµCouncil Minutes for and are now available on the University’s website, following endorsement from ÃÛÌÒÊÓÆµCouncil. The Council Minutes for the February and March meetings are also published online.
The University has appointed two new external members to Council. We are delighted to welcome The Hon Wayne Martin AC KC and Mr Andrew Metcalfe AO, who have been appointed from 1 July 2025 to 30 June 2029.

The Honourable Wayne Martin AC KC
|
Mr Martin is a long-serving former Chief Justice of Western Australia and current Chief Justice of Appeal in the Courts of the Dubai International Financial Centre. Mr Martin graduated from the University of Western Australia in 1973, with a Bachelor of Laws and First Class Honours and has a Master of Laws from King’s College, London. He was made a KC in 1993.
In addition to his work as a barrister, Mr Martin is the former Lieutenant Governor of Western Australia, former Chairman of the Western Australian Law Reform Commission, and the former President of the Administrative Review Council and Western Australia Bar Association. He has served on numerous boards throughout his career.
In 2012, Mr Martin was appointed a Companion in the General Division of the Order of Australia, for eminent service to the judiciary and to the law, particularly as Chief Justice of Western Australia, to legal reform and education, and to the community. In 2007 he was awarded the Western Australia Citizen of the Year for the Professions.

Mr Metcalfe was a Commonwealth departmental secretary for 12 years, heading three departments. He was appointed or reappointed as a Secretary by five different Prime Ministers, and directly worked with 15 portfolio ministers.
Mr Metcalfe has held numerous senior roles in the Departments of Immigration, and the Prime Minister and Cabinet, and has been the Chief of Staff to a Cabinet Minister. He was the Secretary (CEO) of the Department of Immigration from 2005 to 2012, and Secretary of the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry in 2013. Between 2014 and January 2020 Mr Metcalfe was a senior partner in Ernst and Young.
Mr Metcalfe is also an existing member of our Audit, Finance and Risk Committee.
Mr Metcalfe was appointed as an Officer of the Order of Australia in 2012. He is also a Fellow of the Institute of Public Administration Australia.

Dr Francis Markham has resigned from ÃÛÌÒÊÓÆµCouncil, effective 11 August.
The Council thanks Dr Markham for his service and will begin the process to find a replacement shortly.

Young science scholars flourish as tall poppies
|
Remarkable early-career scholars from ÃÛÌÒÊÓÆµ (ANU) have been recognised with prestigious ACT Young Tall Poppy Science Awards for their significant contributions to sustainable energy.
Associate Professor Xiaolin Wang, Dr Emily Furlong and Dr Ashley Jones have been acknowledged for their innovative developments to hydrogen storage, antimicrobial resistance and the adaptability of Australian plants.

Dr Samantha McGaughey is on a mission to demonstrate how science can help create a brighter, more sustainable future for us all.
Based at the ÃÛÌÒÊÓÆµResearch School of Biology, the plant scientist’s work focuses on cutting edge technology that can help turn wastewater “from a problem into an opportunity”.
She says her research team takes inspiration from nature.

Science & Technology studies scholar Dr Thao Phan wins 2025 Max Crawford Medal
|
ÃÛÌÒÊÓÆµLecturer in the School of Sociology Dr Thao Phan has been named the 2025 Max Crawford Medal recipient for her work in feminist science and technology studies. Her research highlights how race, gender and power shape the technologies we use every day.

Racism@Uni Survey – your voice matters
|
Starting from this Thursday 14 August, all staff and students aged 18 and over will receive a personalised Racism@Uni Survey link via email. Led by the Australian Human Rights Commission, this landmark study will examine the prevalence, nature and impact of racism in Australian universities.
The survey, conducted by POLIS: Centre for Social Policy Research with the Online Research Unit, will take about 15 minutes to complete and will be open for four weeks. Participation is anonymous and all responses will be de-identified.
ÃÛÌÒÊÓÆµis proud to be one of Australia’s most diverse university communities, with staff and students from more than 100 countries. By taking part, you’ll help create a clearer picture of what’s happening on campus and online – and what needs to change.

The University’s finance system, ES Financials, will be unavailable for 3 days from 7pm Thursday 14 August to 7am Monday 18 August. This is a planned outage to allow the system to be updated.
Required action: All users (admin and self-service) of ES Financials are asked to log off by 7pm Thursday 14 August. Any users who have not logged off by this time will be automatically logged off from the system.
This update is a part of the University's wider efforts to maintain, improve functionality and strengthen the security of our enterprise systems.

This is the 100th Subway in Australia opened by franchisee Shamim Mohammad, who came to Australia from Bangladesh on a scholarship to study Accounting and Finance. Student Central is moving
|
This Thursday 14 August, Student Central will be closed as the team relocates to the new Student Hub on Level 1 of the Di Riddell Student Centre.
The Student Hub will open in the new location from 10am on Friday 15 August and will provide all the services currently offered by Student Central, with the added benefit of a larger, more accessible space in a central campus location.
At launch, the Student Hub will include the Student Central team, the Allianz Overseas Student Health Cover representative and the IT Service Desk. Over the coming months, more student-facing services will transition into the space, creating a central destination for student enquiries and support.

Wi-Fi Interference: a common but fixable issue

Ever wondered why your Wi-Fi slows down or disconnects? Wi-Fi interference occurs when signals or barriers disrupt your connection -- think of it as static for the internet.
Common causes include nearby networks, personal hotspots (especially in lecture halls), and obstacles like walls, appliances, or electronics such as microwaves and Bluetooth devices.
Help us reduce interference. Turn off personal hotspots in shared spaces to let campus Wi-Fi work smoothly.
